Lucknow: Shia Waqf Board Chairman Waseem Rizvi has been sued for Rs 20 crore over his remarks against madrasas in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The defamation notice has been served by Jamiat Ulama-E-Hind, one of the leading Islamic foundations in the country.
The organization has sought an unconditional apology for the remarks, which were also criticized by Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
In his letter to the PM and CM, Rizvi demanded the shutting down of madrassas in the country, alleging that they encouraged Muslim students to “become terrorists”. Rizvi even advised that all madrassa boards be dissolved and replaced by schools affiliated to the CBSE or ICSE, which can offer Islamic education as optional subject.
Hitting out at Rizvi, Naqvi had on Thursday said that madrassas contribute to the growth of the country. “I have studied in a madrasa. Am I a terrorist? I am really hurt and sad by the way people are defaming madrasas. Debate and concern should be on issues like timely disbursal of salaries to madrasa teachers. There are some mad people giving absurd statements about madrasas. The media should not give any hype to such people,” he had told News18.
