Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief minister Jayalalithaa has announced a new scheme called Amma Cement.

The cement will be sold at a concessional rate of Rs 190 per bag and a maximum of 750 bags can be bought under this scheme. The Tamil Nadu government will procure 2 lakh metric tonnes of cement every month from private players under this scheme.

The launch of Amma Cement comes after the launch of other schemes such as Amma Canteen, Amma Mineral Water and Amma Pharmacy.

Amma canteens offer affordable breakfast and lunch for the welfare of daily wagers, auto and rickshaw drivers, vendors and other floating population in corporations across the state.

First launched in Chennai offering idlis at Re one a piece and sambar and curd rices at Rs five and Rs three respectively, these canteens became an instant hit among the consumers, who pleaded for addition of new items in the menu.

The Amma Drinking Water scheme was launched in September 2013, and mineral water bottles were sold in all long-distance government buses and bus stands in Chennai and other districts.

The Tamil Nadu government also launched Amma Pharmacy in June 2014. 10 such pharmacies were set up across Chennai and 90 in the rest of the state to sell medicines at a subsided rate to the general public.

Jayalalithaa has also introduced other Amma schemes such as Amma School Bags, Amma Tea, Amma Cinemas and Amma Salt.
