The survey of granite blocks hoarded by companies involved in illegal granite quarrying in Melur taluk of Madurai using unmanned aerial vehicle developed by MIT of Anna university continued for the second day on Saturday.
The vehicle was flown over Pokkishamalai area in Keelavalavu, CeeCee Kanmoi, Chettikkadu and Attappatti Salai areas where the granite blocks were hoarded.A team led by M C Mohandass, Deputy Director of the Geology and Mining department, is involved in the process of assessing the blocks.
The authorities started the assessment work in Keelaiyur area where there were 6 stock yards. It is said there were around 21,000 granite blocks in these yards.
The blocks are being categorised into export quality, for domestic market and wastage and valued appropriately.
Sources said the export quality and domestic market categories are valued at Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 per cubic metre. The wastage blocks are valued at Rs 10,000 per cubic metre.It is said around 1.4 lakh granite blocks have been accounted for till Saturday.
These blocks are being held in stock yards spread in the villages of Keelaiyur, Keelavalavu, E Malampatti, Puduthamaraippatti, Tiruvathavoor areas of Melur taluk.In a related development Keelavalavu police have registered three cases against M S Granites, Coramandel granites and R V Enterprises for quarrying in government lands.
