New Delhi: BJP vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu has denied that the party has taken a decision on who will replace L K Advani as the next BJP president.
"Informal discussions are still going on. No name has been finalised. There is no confusion in the party," Naidu said.
"Advani is still the BJP President," he added.
On Saturday morning party sources had said that Rajnath Singh had been named the new president of the BJP.
Rajnath had said that "Advani is still our leader. We are all party workers and whatever responsibility is given to me I will accept it."
The RSS has refrained from commenting on the issue and RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said, "It would be premature to say anything about any particular individual unless the party formally announces. Party has not announced anything so far, so let's wait and see."
Advani was in favour of appointing Venkaiah Naidu as his successor but the latter was reluctant as he wanted the assurance of a four-year-term which was not acceptable to the second-rung leaders of the BJP.
BJP leader Sushma Swaraj was the other contender for the coveted post but lack of mass support went against her.
BJP stalwart Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi was also in the race but his pro-Hindutva hardliner image combined with his age turned against him.
