KOTTAYAM: Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Saturday hailed the people of Kottayam, the first district to become 100 per cent literate in the state. At a public meeting held here in connection with the Jan Chetana Yatra, he reminded the audience that he too was a man of letters as a scribe before taking the plunge into politics. He added that much had changed over the years with Internet gaining popularity.“Without learning about modern communication systems like Internet, any kind of education would be incomplete,” he said and called upon the parents to ensure that their children learned enough of Internet and other-related matters. Advani recalled the days of P V Narasimha Rao Government when computer classes were held for MPs. Advani said he attended those classes from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Parliament without fail. Referring to the reports of rise in corruption in the country, he appealed to the people to fight against the scourge and reject a government which had failed to tackle graft. “The credibility of the country has gone down owing to the government’s failure to stop corruption, he said. Advani also urged the people to root out corruption from the country and create a new India. He demanded that the black money stacked outside the country be brought back and invested in improving facilities in rural areas. The BJP leader also flayed the UPA Government for only targeting non-Congress ministers in the 2G spectrum case while protecting the Congress ministers. Advani said the CBI should conduct a probe into the 2G spectrum case under the supervision of the Supreme Court. People from neighbouring areas thronged the place and there was fairly a good crowd for the meeting. Rains stopped just before the arrival of Advani.Tight security was arranged at the venue. The police also detained some people who were inebriated.
