KOCHI: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan observed a one-day hunger strike at Mullaperiyar agitation pandal in Vandiperiyar on Wednesday. Addressing the gathering VS appealed to Tamil Nadu to not kill the people who have been giving water to them for 116 years. He said the agitation has become the voice of people in Kerala for a right cause.VS said that Mullaperiyar dam was a century old and it would be the oldest dam in the world. He said the agitation for a new dam should be peaceful and the issue cannot be resolved through violence. He condemned the attack on Tamilians at Kumily on Monday.  Achuthanandan added that the demand for the new dam began in 1979 but the Central governments were not given enough consideration. He said those who have the responsibility to consider the issue have been ignoring it. The Central government had given nod for a new dam in 1979 and the expert team appointed by them had spotted the land for it. But the Tamil Nadu which has done some patch up works claims that the dam is safe. But with frequent tremors in Idukki, no one can assure the safety of the dam. Later ending his fast at Chappath, VS said that people in Kerala are unitedly demanding a new dam in Mullaperiyar. The silent protest will continue till the Union government finds a proper solution to the issue.
