Abandoned for suspected AIDS, baby tests HIV -ve
Earlier, she tested HIV Reactive in a basic AIDS test.

New Delhi: CNN-IBN on Wednesday reported the story of thirteen-day-old Kritika, who was found in an auto rickshaw in Noida, then handed over by police to a childless family.

The family only kept the baby for three days, before backing out when they discovered that she could possibly be HIV positive. The reason - she tested HIV Reactive in a basic AIDS test. Kritika has since been under the care of an NGO.

Now her test results now prove that she is HIV negative.

Satyam Hospital MD Dr Narendra Gupra said, "Kritika is absolutely normal. We have the report from the Ranbaxy that she is HIV negative. She is not carrying the DNA for HIV virus."

The NGO, which was taking care of the baby, will now look for the adoption procedures.

Earlier, Neeraj Sarin a medical representative in Ghaziabad kept the baby for all of three days. He backed out the moment he found out that she had tested HIV reactive

The disturbing trend in all this is that everyone - from the auto driver who first found Kritika, to the police official who handed her to the Sarins - treated the whole procedure as child's play.

But on Wednesday, the Noida Police finally filed an FIR, days after the baby first came to their notice.

When asked why the baby was simply handed over to the childless family, without being put for adoption through a proper agency, Noida SP, Paresh Pandey said, "On humanitarian grounds, we also have to give the child some amount of care and so we gave her to a family. We first gave her to M Gupta. When he could not bear the expenses of the baby, then she was given to someone else and finally and NGO stepped in to take care of her."

However, the Central Adoption Resource Agency states that a person who comes across an abandoned baby needs to first report it to the police.

What's your reaction?
