The Priya Sisters (Shanmugapriya and Haripriya), proclaimed in their concert for the Narada Gana Sabha, that their expository technique wasn’t projected on hackneyed lines, but on understanding and picturising the swaroopas of Ragas and the Keerthanas. This came into view when the Priya Sisters gave a good momentum, by exploring Kaanada Raga alapana (Sukhi evaro) of Thyagaraja, where he brings out the fundamental to spiritual basis of the relationship between man and his creator. In the exposition of Raga Purvakalyani, (Paripoorna Kama) of Thyagaraja, one could discern their perception of the aesthetics, where Thyagaraja beseeches Lord Rama for his abundant grace. The rendition of extensive ‘Kambodhi alapana’ by Haripriya in jet speed, to reveal the ravishing swaroopas elated the listeners. However, I am of the opinion that excellence in music is always sustained by vision of Rasa in alapana and songs. The fast tempo made our listening pleasure ‘subdued’. In Haripriya, I found a natural mezzo-soprano singer, thanks to her ability to hold a note, anywhere in the octave. The rendition of the sisters in (Aadum Deivam) of Papanasam Sivan, with admirable niraval and swaras, was involved and imaginative. The sisters showed their involvement in exploring Raga Lalitha, sung by Shanmugapriya and the Pallavi (Ambikae Jagadambikae) tuned by their mentor vocal maestro TR Subramaniam, was presented meliorating the Raga, with extreme care and poise. This concert revealed their polished expressional maturity, striving to communicate their package, with convincing classical fore. They are endowed with tonal facility and the training they had under their guru. It percolates through the Raga sancharas.MA Krishnaswamy (violin) was stoic in responding to the sisters, Nevyeli Skandasubramaniam (mridangam) and BS Purushotham (Kanjira) were at their impressive best.
