80% workforce doesnt get social security benefits: KLM

Conducted by Martin Patric for KLM, The study focused on labourers in theunorganised sector in the district. According to the study, unorganised workers face issues like the absence of the trade unions’ involvement, the temporary nature of the job accompanied by low salary, inter-sector and location-wise differences in the reported income of the workers, health problems relating to environmental issues and the seasonality of jobs. “Teachers in unaided schools and self-financing higher education institutions, nurses in private hospitals, and salespersons in large private firms constitute the unorganised workers in the formal sector,” the study said.  The size of unorganised workers calculated on the basis of the employmentaffiliation, nature of employment and social security measures in the district stands at 88.76 per cent. “It includes permanent workers without social security measures to the extent of 20.91 per cent. Out of them, 15.71 per cent are in the formal enterprises,” the study found. The report has also stated that many workers have regular jobs with informal establishments, and hence are reported as permanent, but do not enjoy social security benefits, except bonus for a few. These sectors pursue casualisation as a strategy under the spirit of liberalisation.
