PUDUCHERRY: Cases were registered against eight persons including a member of a temple trust by the Lawspet Police on Sunday, based on a complaint filed by a woman over the demolition of some compound walls. According to police, a three-acre land belonging to a temple at Karuvadikuppam was illegally sold to nearly 70 persons by a person,in 1990. Some of them built houses and compound walls on the plots they bought. The area where the land is located is now known as Rajiv Gandhi Nagar. On February 12, the temple trust officials convened a meeting, during which they urged the residents of these plots to pay lakhs of rupees more. They refused and walked out of the meet, allegedly held at the behest of an AINRC MLA and was attended by his father. Recently, a group of persons, allegedly led by one of the temple trustees, entered some of the plots and demolished the compound walls. Following the incident, the residents staged a protest at the Lawspet police station on Sunday.
