The fight for screens between the big two films releasing this Deepavali seems to have intensified already. Suriya's 7am Arivu and Vijay's Velayudham are to battle it out at the box office this Deepavali.
The success of these films at the box-office will depend to a considerable extent on the screens that each of them get. Recently, fans of Vijay met the owner of the multiplex Devi complex and requested him to screen Velayudham in one of the two big screens in the complex - Devi and Devi Paradise.
In a letter that they handed to him, they reportedly said, "Your multiplex has been screening our hero's films on a regular basis for the past several years. In fact, our hero usually watches the first day’s first show of his film along with us. This year, however, no announcement regarding the screening of Velayudham in the two big screens of the multiplex has been made so far.
This has hurt us. We therefore request you on behalf of lakhs of Vijay's fans to kindly screen our hero's film in at least one of the two big screens in your multiplex."
Confirms an industry source, "Yes, there is a contest going on between the two sides. If one is to go by the theatres listed in advertisements so far, Vijay’s Velayudham will be screened in 38 screens in the city while Suriya’s 7am Arivu will be screened in 48 screens in the city."
Adds the source, "Usually, Vijay's movies get released in Kamala and Devi theatres. However, this time, the film hasn’t been released in these theatres. But, the film is to be screened in one of the other theatres in the Devi multiplex."
Velayudham has several pluses. Apart from Vijay, who has a big, strong fan base, it has at its helm, director Jayam Raja, who has an impressive record when it comes to churning out hits.
Clarifies Jayam Raja, "Although there appears to be a clash between the two films, there isn’t one. Earlier, there was this trend of a single big film releasing for a festival. However, we have departed from that trend. The truth is that it is the festive season and both of us are looking to capitalise on it."
Suriya's 7am Arivu is no less impressive. Apart from Harris Jayaraj’s music, the film will feature Suriya in two roles – one as a Buddhist monk and the other as a circus artiste. The third film, which may make an unexpected difference to the contest this Deepavali, is Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra One, which also features Kareena Kapoor. Chances of this film giving the other two a run for their money are pretty strong as the film’s Tamil version is also bound to get released this Deepavali.
