Jalpaiguri: A herd of wild elephants strayed into a tea estate in Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, creating chaos and tension among the people residing in and around the tea gardens on Tuesday.
Reportedly, this herd comprising of 50 to 60 adult and calf elephants has been often visiting Dumding tea garden after dusk over the past couple of days.
"These elephants attacked two persons in which one died on the spot and the other is in the hospital as he has broken his leg. These elephants come here everyday. They were here since last night and in the morning when they were trying to go out, they got stuck in the garden," said Ukil Razzak, a local villager.
Another local said that the elephants are quite common in the region and the Forest Rangers have done nothing on their part.
He also noted that after dusk, it is problematic to move in and around the tea gardens.
"This is a regular story, this is nothing new. These elephants come here everyday and spread chaos in the area, they vandalise the houses of the people. All people staying here are the caretakers of the garden. Nobody has come from the administration as yet. After 5 in the evening it is very problematic to walk on this road," said Biplob Moitra, another local from Dumding Tea Estate.
The region is an elephant corridor and herds of elephants including lone tuskers at times are noticed passing along the tea estates while migrating from one end of the forest to another.
