45-Year-Old Woman Drowns In Open Drain In Andheri Amid Heavy Rain In Mumbai
A 45-year-old woman drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri following a heavy downpour in Mumbai on Wednesday.

A 45-year-old woman drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri following a heavy downpour in Mumbai on Wednesday that led to severe waterlogging at several locations, said officials.

The incident occurred at around 9.20 pm near gate no. 8 of MIDC, Andheri East, they said. The local police and the fire brigade were alerted and rushed to the incident site to rescue the woman identified as Vimal Anil Gaikwad.

The Brihanmumbai Corporation (BMC) officials confirmed that the victim was rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade officials and sent to Cooper Hospital, where she was declared dead.

The BMC issued a statement and said, “A 45-year-old lady Vimal Gaikwad drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri. She was rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade and sent to Cooper Hospital but was declared dead by doctors.”

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its adjoining districts till 8:30 am on Thursday. Other districts on red alert are Thane, Palghar, and Raigad.

Landslide At Mumbra Bypass

A landslide incident was reported at the Mumbra bypass area which further disrupted the traffic flow in the city for more than three hours on Wednesday.

Fire officer Swapnil Sarnobat said, “The traffic jam persisted for about 3 hours. During this period, the traffic department also controlled the traffic from one side. Fortunately, there is no news of any loss of life.”

Given the torrential rain, the Mumbai Police and the BMC have issued advisories asking the citizens to remain indoors as much as possible.

“Following the continuous rain and red alert currently going on in Mumbai, citizens should come out of their homes only if necessary. Avoid going to coastal and low-lying areas,” they said in a post on X.

Maharashtra Schools Closed Today

In the wake of the heavy rain lashing the city, schools and colleges will remain closed in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad on Thursday. Earlier, BMC officials issued a similar order for the closure of educational institutes in Mumbai.
