CUTTACK: Three persons were killed and four others injured when the autorickshaw they were travelling in was crushed by a speeding truck near Bhagalpur under Cuttack Sadar Police limits early on Saturday. The incident fuelled public outrage as locals blocked the Phulnakhara-Niali road demanding arrest of the truck driver and compensation to those injured and kin of deceased. Vehicular traffic on the busy road was paralysed for more than four hours as the agitators stuck to their guns. The blockade was withdrawn after intervention of district administration and police who assured to provide compensation to the victims.According to reports, seven persons of Badajharilo village and nearby Jayarasasan village were on their way back after witnessing ‘Bhasani Utsav’ at Sailo Gobindpur village in the area when the mishap occurred. Three persons identified as Ganesh Bhoi (45), Ramesh Bhoi (26) of Badajharilo village and Sukanta Bhoi(42) of Jayarasasan under Balianta Police limits died on the spot. Four others Kanhu Bhoi (25), Bichia Bhoi (35), Santosh Bhoi (28) and Babuli Bhoi (27) were injured. They were first rushed to the nearby Mahidharpada hospital but were shifted to the SCB Medical, Cuttack, soon after. Their condition is stated to be serious.As the news spread, hundreds of locals gathered and blocked the road. Kantapada tehsildar, Sadar police and other officials rushed to the spot and persuaded them to call off the blockade by promising action. The locals demanded ` 1 lakh compensation to the kin of each deceased and ` 50,000 and free treatment to each injured.
