TIRUPUR: About 43 passengers of a mini bus including 25 school students sustained severe injuries when the bus hit a road side pit here on Tuesday.According to police sources, a private mini bus was on the way to Iduvampalayam from Arumuthampalayam with about 50 passengers from a nearby villages at around 8.30 am on Tuesday. Near Vanjipalayamover, bus hit a pothole and the driver lost control. The bus swerved off the road, scraped against an electricity pole and came to a halt after hitting a barbed-wire fence. 40 women and 3 men sustained injuries. Residents of Vanjipalayam rushed to the spot and rescued the passengers. The injured persons were sent to the Tirupur Headquarters Government Hospital by three mini vans. Sugumar, a dyeing unit worker from Mahalakshmi Nagar said, “The mini bus was crowded and I was travelling on the footboard. When the bus hit the pothole, I tried to jump off to avoid being hit by the electric post. However, my calf hit the post and I fell off from the bus.”He said, “Due to overcrowding, passengers fell on one another and most of them hit against the iron bars and seats. Two women in the front side out of the bus after smashing the front mirror. Some passengers who were on footboard fell on thorny bushes.” Bus driver Umakanth (29) fled the spot.Various reasons citedPassengers cited various reasons for the accident including the poor condition of the bus, the driver talking on his mobile phone and his interaction with girls in the bus.
