Revellers who oppose the SC ban argue that it is a religious festival.

Madurai: Twenty five people were injured in a 'Jallikattu' (taming the bull) event conducted as part of the Pongal celebrations at Palamedu near here today, police said.

The condition of one of the injured is serious, they said.

As many as 472 bulls from Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Theni, Virdhunagar, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Madurai and Turunelveli participated in the game.

The event was held as per the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, which included measures like the sports ground being separated from the gallery, officials said, adding that tight security arrangements were made for the game.

A total of 340 people took part in the game.

While 24 injured were treated as outpatients, one person was admitted to the government Rajaji hospital, police said.

The Supreme Court's orders before it granted conditional permission to the seemingly gory sport held in religious reverence were exacting.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan had laid down norms to be followed if the event was to be held, and many doubt if they were adhered to in reality.

The rules were:

  • The District authority should ensure the animals are not subjected to cruelty.
  • The event will have to be recorded on video.
  • The district authorities would take all precautions to prevent any injury either to the spectators or animals.
  • Any organisation or club which plans to hold Jalikattu will have to inform the concerned District Collector three days prior to the event and seek permission.

  • Officials of the Animal Welfare Board will have to witness the event, wherever it is planned to be held.
  • The Collector will have to give a report of the observation of orders or otherwise within two weeks after the events.
  • The court passed had its order on an application moved by the Tamil Nadu Government which had sought a modification of January 11 interim order that refused to vacate the stay on holding "Jalikattu".
