The 24 accused who have been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by the High Court in the Marad massacre case surrendered before the Kozhikode Special Additional Sessions Court (Marad cases) here on Friday.
A Division Bench of the High Court had set aside the acquittal of 24 accused of the 76 acquitted in the case by the trial court on August 17 and had directed them to surrender before the special court for serving the sentence on August 24.
Additional District Sessions Judge, who was acting as the judge in the absence of the Special Judge Narayanan Pisharody, sent the accused to the Kozhikode district jail. They will be shifted to Kannur Central Prison on Saturday.
The 24 accused were Haris, Shihab, Akbar, Navas, Shamsu, Ali Akbar alias Ali, Shameer, Noushad, Moideen Koya, Riyaz, Ameer, Shihab, Thajudheen, Subair alias Koyamon, Ashraf, Assainar, Aboobacker, Knhikoya, Abbas, Ashraf, K Majeed, Moideen Koya, Nazeer and Ashraf.
There were 148 accused in the case pertaining to the communal violence in Marad in which eight fishermen were killed by an armed mob in May 2003. One assailant also died accidentally in the violence.
The Special Court awarded rigorous life imprisonment to 62 persons and five-year imprisonment to an accused, Latheef Assainar, manager of Juma Masjid at Marad.
