23,787 ex-devadasis live in Karnataka: Survey

State government has identified as many as 23,787 ex-devadasis in 14 districts in the state during the recent survey conducted by the Karnataka State Women Development Corporation.

In a reply to Congress member R V Venkatesh in the Legislative Council on Friday, the minister for Women and Child Development Kalakappa G Bandi has informed the House that state government have taken several measures to rehabilitate the ex-devadasis.

He said that the state government apart from providing a pension of `400 per month to those who were above 40 years of age also helping the ex-devadasis to have there own house under a housing scheme at the cost of `40,000 per unit.

The minister also informed that state government also has schemes to provide micro loan to generate income and health camp programmes.

He said that under the Udyogini scheme as many as 14,488 beneficiaries have got benefitted and were giving training during 2011-12. “Government also has plans to rehabilitate over 4,000 ex-devadasis during the year 2012-13,” Venkatesh added.

To an other questions to Venkatesh, the Endowment and the Ports minister Kota Srinivasa Poojary has informed that the state government is spending over Rs 37.20 crore during 2012-13 to improve infrastructure facilities in its small ports.

Informing that the state has as many as 11 small ports under its administration including Karwar, Belikeri, Thadadi, Honnavara, Manki, Bhatkal, Kundapur, Hangarakatta, Malpe, Padubidri and Old Mangalore, the minister said that government has plans to take the second stage development works in the Karwar port under the Public Private Participation (PPP) model.
