Shimoga: A 16-year-girl has returned Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award in protest against government’s efforts to curb freedom of expression. She is the youngest writer to return a government award in the entire India.

Muddu Thirthahalli, a First PUC (11th standard) student of Sahayadri High School in Shimoga district of Karnataka has returned the Karnataka Sahitya Akademy award she got in 2011 for a collection of her essays, local media reports claim.

She said "there cannot be any restrictions on freedom of expression as literature is a medium of expression”. She said that she had already conveyed her decision to the academy and nothing would change her stand.

Muddu has been a writer since her primary school days. She has been a known face in children's literary circles for several years.
