New Delhi: The Delhi Police has submitted a 14-page status report to the High Court which alleges that there might be a larger conspiracy behind the protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Referring to the pro-Afzal Guru event on the JNU campus, the report states that the police wants to unearth the conspiracy behind the seditious act.
The status report also says that the February 9 event had ramifications in India as well abroad. The Delhi Police has said it wants to see if there's nexus with the anti-India movement in the country.
Kanhiya Kumar's bail plea has been deferred till February 29. Delhi Police is opposing his bail on the grounds that his release will make him a hero for anti-national elements. The HC has told the police to ensure there's not even a scratch on Kanhaiya while he's in jail.
Meanwhile, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya have been sent to three-day police custody. The Delhi Police has also applied for production warrant for JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya, who is currently in judicial custody.
Umar and Anirban who are facing sedition charges surrendered on Tuesday and were questioned for over five hours at the South Campus Police Station.
Khalid and Bhattacharya are among the five students who, along with JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, had allegedly shouted anti-national slogans at an event organised in the university campus to mark the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on February 9.
