‘11th plan will focus on agriculture’
Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said that the 11th Five Year plan will give priority to the agriculture.

New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that the 11th Five Year plan will give priority to the agriculture.

He also said that the Government has constituted a committee of six chief ministers who will advise to improve the growth in this sector.

Pawar was attending the annual general meeting of the Vasantdada Sugar Institute along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Pawar said that the BJP-led government gave only 1.5 per cent of share to agriculture in its budget allocation compared to 13 per cent in the telecom sector.

Commenting about previous government’s approach towards the agriculture sector, Pawar said that at any point the sector couldn’t be ignored or sidestepped but said that the earlier government’s step to invest in telecommunications was not a bad move.

"Now, we have changed the policy. Farmers are getting adequate and low-interest loans and the agriculture sector is on the revival path," Pawar told PTI.

The decision to permit sugar export was a good move as this year will see a record production of sugar.

The estimated output has been pegged at 240 lakh tonnes, 40 per cent more than the total demand of 190 lakh tonnes, he said.
