CHENNAI: In a daring incident, burglars broke into a Corporation official’s house at Pallikaranai on Wednesday and decamped with over 100 sovereigns of jewellery.S Sivakumar (40) and his wife Lakshmi Prabha (39), residents of Chakravarthy Nagar in Narasinghapuram, were both attached to the Public Health Department of Chennai Corporation and posted at Velachery. Sivakumar was a health inspector, while his wife a nurse, a police officer told Express. On Wednesday morning, they duo left for work and, on returning around 2.30 pm, found the front door lock broken.  The jewels in the safe, estimated to be around 120 sovereigns, had been stolen. The couple had gone to Dindigul last week to attend a function and returned only on Tuesday. “So, they kept the jewels in the steel safe at their house, as they had no time to deposit them in the bank locker. The keys had been left in the almirah,” the officer added. On receiving information about the theft, senior police officials, including DCP (St Thomas Mount) Bhaskar, visited the scene of crime. Forensic experts also arrived to look for fingerprints. The officer said the couple stayed in an independent house located in an isolated area. “The locality is just developing ... the houses are scattered, making it easy for the burglars to make their entry undetected,” he claimed.Special teams have been formed to nab the burglars.
