Make sure to discharge your body of any static charge that might be built up on you. After you open up your computer it is best to ground the case of the machine. If you don't have anything to do this with you can always just touch something metal before touching the computer to discharge any static charge you have on you. And avoid wool clothing because it can build very large static charges.
Never have liquids or solids near a computer you are working on. Either of these two things when introduced onto hardware of a computer will create damage. Install (or have somebody else install) an anti-virus and an anti-spyware software. It is best to check what files are infected before lettings the virus scanner delete the file. Never share financial information over the internet. Always use some sort of privacy program like encryption or anonymous IP when dealing with banking or anything that requires a credit card number.
Avoid having chemicals that cause metal to rust quickly or dissolve plastics anywhere near your computer.
