How to Cancel State Farm Insurance: Auto, Homeowners, Renters, & More
Maybe you just sold your car, and you don’t need auto insurance anymore. Or, maybe you found a new insurance provider with even better rates. Whatever the reason, there may come a day when you no longer need your State Farm insurance policy. Fortunately, State Farm makes it easy for their customers to cancel over the phone, in the mail, or in person. We’ll tell you how to cancel your insurance quickly and without any hassle, as well as some things to consider before you do.
Things You Should Know
  • Call your local agent to cancel over the phone. Or, call 800-STATEFARM if you’re just canceling auto insurance.
  • Mail a letter to State Farm headquarters in Illinois to cancel via mail.
  • Make an in-person appointment with your local agent to cancel face-to-face.

Over the Phone

Call your local agent to cancel home or renters insurance. When you signed up for State Farm insurance, you probably got connected with a local agent who lives nearby. Simply give them a call to start the cancellation process right away. Don’t have a local agent? No problem! Check out this list of agents by state, then call the agent who lives closest to you. They’ll be able to help you out.

Call 800-STATEFARM to cancel auto insurance. If you are canceling your auto insurance (and JUST your auto insurance), you can give State Farm’s auto policy line a ring. Call 1-800-782-8332 to start the process. If you are canceling any other insurance policies, like renters or home insurance, you’ll have to call your local agent.

Schedule a cancellation or have it go into effect immediately. If you’d like to drop your insurance immediately, State Farm can do a same-day cancellation. However, if you don’t want a lapse in your insurance, you can ask the agent to keep your policy intact for a few days or weeks. Fortunately, State Farm does not charge a cancellation fee. It’s important to avoid a lapse in insurance, no matter what you’re canceling. In many states, driving without auto insurance is illegal, and canceling home, renters, or other insurance can leave you vulnerable to expensive damages or repairs.

Inform your DMV if you cancel or change auto insurance. In some states, you have to tell the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) if you cancel or change your auto insurance. Ask your agent about this policy; if you do, be sure to contact your DMV right away. In many states, it’s illegal to drive a car without auto insurance. Be sure you have a new auto insurance policy in place before canceling with State Farm.

By Mail

Write a letter that includes your personal info and policy number. In the letter, include your name, your address, and your phone number. Also include your State Farm policy number, and note the date and time that you’d like your policy to end. If you’re switching to a new insurance company, add your new insurance provider’s name as well as the policy number and start date. If you’re canceling your insurance because you’ve sold your vehicle, include proof of plate forfeiture or your bill of sale in the letter as well.

Mail the letter to State Farm Corporate Headquarters. State Farm headquarters is located in Illinois. Address your letter to: Corporate HeadquartersState Farm InsuranceOne State Farm PlazaBloomington, IL 61710

Give State Farm about 2 weeks to process your request. Canceling via mail takes slightly longer than canceling in phone or in person, so give yourself some extra time. After you mail your letter, it will take about 2 weeks for your policy to be canceled.

In Person

Visit your local agent at their office. Contact your agent and make an appointment to come in. Or, head to their office to see if they have time to meet with you that same day.

Take your policy number and personal information with you. Similar to canceling via mail, you’ll need to provide your personal information, like your name, address, and phone number. You’ll also need your State Farm policy number, as well as the date and time you’d like your policy to end. If you recently sold a vehicle (and that’s why you’re canceling your insurance), bring along a proof of plate forfeiture or your bill of sale.

Let your agent know if you’re going to switch insurance providers. If you’re switching to a new insurance provider, bring your new provider’s name, policy number, and start date along, too. Your cancellation request will be processed that same day. Your agent needs your new insurance policy number so they can note that you won’t have a lapse in insurance.

Considerations before Canceling

Switch your agent if you’re unhappy with your customer service. Maybe State Farm itself isn’t the problem, but your agent is. If your State Farm agent isn’t working for you, you can switch agents easily. Either send a request to [email protected], or call 800-782-8332. You can also mail your request for a new agent to: Agency/Sales ResourcesP.O. Box 853918Richardson, TX 75085-3918

Adjust your premium if it’s outside of your budget. Your insurance premiums may fluctuate over time. To change how much they are and when you pay them, ask your agent about discounts you could be getting or starting a payment plan. Typically, your premium range will be noted in your contract. If you aren’t sure how low you can get your premium, check the paperwork you signed when you first got your insurance.

Compare new insurance policies to your current policy. Forgoing insurance entirely isn’t a good idea (and in many cases, it’s actually illegal). Before you cancel your current policy, be sure you have a new one in place, and compare your rates and premiums to your State Farm policy. Compare quotes online by plugging your info into a comparison chart.
