When is the best time to eat sweets? A question that is often posed by a lot of sweet lovers. All around the world, there are many sweet tooths. Even though many health professionals have highlighted the adverse effects of sugar on health, it is quite difficult to get away from sugar as it is everywhere. You get sugar everywhere in our food, desserts, shakes, and more. Eating a lot of sugar cannot just lead to excessive weight gain; it can lead to a lot of other health problems as well. As a result, it is extremely necessary to understand the right to consume sugar. Nutritionist Sonia Bakshi, who is the founder of DtF, has explained the right time to have sugar in a day.
In a conversation with the Indian Express, nutritionist Sonia Bakshi explained that the human body metabolises sugar similarly to alcohol, which converts dietary carbohydrates into fat. With time, it can lead to fatty liver diseases, which are potential factors for heart disease and diabetes. She added, “Excessive sugar intake can contribute to imbalanced blood sugar levels, which in turn can cause mood swings, fatigue, and even cognitive decline. Chronic high sugar consumption is also linked to inflammation in the body, a risk factor for heart disease, mood disorders, and various cancers. Additionally, it can lead to obesity and hormonal imbalances affecting fertility.”
Sonia explained that in the morning, people eat nutritious breakfasts like cereals, fruits, pastries, and breads. But she advised against eating them because these food items lack other nutrients that balance blood sugar levels. As a result, having sugary items in the morning can spike blood sugar levels. As the body wakes up with an overnight fast, it becomes even more sensitive to carbohydrates. This makes sugar the worst choice for the body in the morning.
Sonia Bakshi also added that, even though there is no right time to consume excessive sugar, the afternoon lunch slot is an apt time to do so. During the middle of the day, the metabolism of the body is usually more active, making it better equipped to process sugars. Apart from that, if someone works out in the evening, consuming sugar for lunch will help them with muscle recovery. However, it is important to have it in controlled proportions.
