At least two people died and 12 others sustained burn injuries after a moving sleeper bus en route to Delhi from Jaipur suddenly caught fire after it reached Gurugram, police said on Wednesday evening.

The bus, carrying an Arunachal Pradesh number, burst into flames at the Delhi-Jaipur expressway in Gurugram causing massive traffic congestion.

The incident took place at around 8:30 pm near the Jharsa flyover on the main carriageway from Delhi to Jaipur. Videos from the scene showed the bus engulfed in flames, with black smoke rising into the sky. Fire teams reached the spot and brought the fire under control, Gurugram police said.

“Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot after we received information that a sleeper bus with registration number AR 01 K 7707 had caught fire on the carriageway. The fire was brought under control, two passengers were charred to death. Some other passengers sustained burn injuries,” Fire Department Deputy Director Gulshan Kalra was quoted by PTI as saying.

Five of the injured were admitted to Medanta Hospital and seven to Civil Hospital, an official said. The cause behind the fire is not clear at the moment.

“As soon as information was received about fire in a bus near Google Company on National Highway-48, Gurugram, Vikas Arora, IPS, the Commissioner of Police, Gurugram including Gurugram Police officials, fire brigade and rescue teams reached the spot and brought the fire under control. The victims injured in this accident have been admitted to the hospital. The situation is completely under control,” Gurugram Police wrote in an X (formerly Twitter) post.
