New Delhi: With Sunil Chhetri being asked to leave for India following an unsuccessful trial at Coventry City, Goal.com caught up with the player’s agent and asked for his opinion on the same.
Yogesh Joshee, a British citizen with Indian roots, had arranged for Sunil’s trails at the English Championship club.
Speaking to Goal.com, Joshee said, "The trials have exposed Sunil to what the expected standard of the English football is. This will definitely be a very valuable experience."
Coventry manager Chris Colman was quoted saying,"A lot was made of him coming over and I think he is going to go around a few clubs. He has had a few days with us but that is it.
"I understand he has a big reputation in India and he is a very nice young man but we won’t be following up our initial interest."
When asked for his comment on the above statement, Joshee said, "I had a word with Coventry manager Coleman the other day. He mentioned that Sunil is a very talented boy but he doesn’t suit his team’s playing style.
"Coventry are currently looking for a target man and Sunil can play well off a target man. You see in English football often the long ball is being sent from the backline and there is a strong personality upfront. Coventry need someone to fulfil that role."
The agent went on to say that Coleman is ready to speak positively about him if any club would ask his opinion on Sunil.
"Three-to-four other clubs have asked about Sunil this week. It wouldn’t be fair on my part to name them but Coleman has stated that he shall speak highly about Sunil if anyone takes his opinion," he added.
So what about the interests from other clubs? Would it materialize?
"Well, the transfer window ends on Monday at 17.00 GMT. So, I had a chat with Sunil and I explained to him about the situation. We shall arrange for some trials in the summer. Mostly, Sunil would be playing in England by next season."
