Guwahati: Local favourites Shillong Lajong FC edged past Chirag United Kerala 1-0 in their I-league encounter at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Guwahati on Thursday.
Playing before a capacity crowd at the Nehru Stadium, Lajong scored the all-important goal through Christopher Chizoba's spot-kick in the 30th minute, and held on to the lead till the end.
Chizoba scored the goal after Lajong forward James Gibilee was brought down by Chirag defender Isaac Baokiji inside the box.
The Kerala side launched several forays into the Lajong half in second session but failed to score, mainly due to solid defensive tactics by the Meghalaya team.
With this win, Lajong earned three points to take their tally in the league to 16, while the Kerala outfit remained on eight from 12 games.
Chirag arrived in Guwahati late in the evening due to a flight delay and were short of match practice, but fought bravely against the spirited Shillong club.
