South Africa's all-time leading goalscorer, McCarthy has been criticised for being overweight.
Johannesburg: South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has left West Ham striker Benni McCarthy out of his 23-man World Cup squad. McCarthy, 32, was one of six players cut from the host nation's 29-man training group when Parreira named his final squad on Tuesday.
South Africa's all-time leading goalscorer, McCarthy has struggled with his fitness and been criticised at home for being overweight.
German-based goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez and defender Bryce Moon were also left out.
Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar was included in the squad read out by assistant coach Pitso Mosimane, as was veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvete. Nomvete completed an unlikely comeback after being dropped in 2008.
