New Delhi: Inter Milan had a disappointing end to their Champions League group stage campaign when they lost 2-1 at Werder Bremen in midweek. Prior to that defeat, the Nerazzurri were stunned in their own San Siro stadium, as the eventual group winners Panathinaikos pulled off a shock 1-0 victory.
Despite this however, the Italian giants will progress to the next phase of the competition, as the second-placed side, meaning that they will have to face one of the group winners.
Due to the fact that they cannot face a team from their own country in the first knockout round, the options are limited for the club as to who they can come up against. The possibilities are Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Porto.
It’s certainly not going to be easy for the club. However, their captain Javier Zanetti is not the slightest bit concerned, and has declared that he would like to see his side face the reigning European champions Manchester United first up.
"We do not fear anyone and I would like to play Manchester United, as I like both the team and the atmosphere at Old Trafford," Zanetti said in an interview with Sky.
"We are not pleased with our end to the group stage, however wait until February, and I assure you we will be a much better team. All the teams in the competition at this stage are tough, so it doesn’t matter who we get," he added.
"I want the final, but it’s too early to talk about that now, as there still are many matches to go," he concluded.
Inter will find out who they face next in the draw for the Champions League, which takes place in Nyon on December 19 at 12:00 CET.
