Abu Dhabi: France World Cup-winner David Trezeguet will play in the UAE Pro-League after signing with last season's runners-up Baniyas on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old striker agreed to a one-year contract which could reportedly earn him 1.7 million Euros at the Abu Dhabi-based club.

Baniyas officials, who refused to disclose the terms of the deal, hailed it as "similar to" Al Wasl's managerial contract with Diego Maradona.

"The deal for Trezeguet is not for the gain of the Baniyas Club alone — it is also a win for UAE football," Baniyas vice-chairman Saif Khaili said.

Trezeguet has played for Monaco, Juventus and most recently Spain's Hercules, which he left after the team's relegation last season.

He won the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship two years later, and was a World Cup runner-up to Italy five years ago. He retired from international duty in 2008.
