When Subhajit was just ten years old, his right hand was badly injured in a bicycle accident. After that, he remained ill for many days. During that time, he was suddenly diagnosed with cancer in the same hand. After that, the doctors said that his hand would have to be amputated. Subhajit’s family took him to Bengaluru for treatment. However, due to his poor financial condition, he eventually returned home. Later, his right hand was removed after an operation in a private hospital in Krishnanagar.

Subhajit’s father is a daily wage labourer in Kolkata. While his mother works in people’s houses as a house help. Due to poor family circumstances, Subhajit studies in his aunt’s house. After losing one hand, he was very demotivated. But my parents stood by me despite their poor financial condition. Their persistence encouraged Subhajit and he decided to take the exam.

After losing his right hand, Subhajit learned to write with his left hand after practising for one and a half months. Subhajit said he felt that he would not be able to pass the exam. He said that the complicated surgery, loss of his hand and practising writing with his left hand took so much time that he could not find time to study. The questions asked in the exam were also quite difficult. But he passed the exams with flying colours. He and his family are very happy about this.

Subhajit says that the family’s support and his determination to make life have brought him this success. However, he has appealed to the state government that it would be a great relief for him and his family if the government would provide financial or other assistance for his studies and his family.
