IIT graduates currently run some of the largest technology companies in the world. The high salary of IIT graduates may intrigue many, but getting admission to an IIT is not easy. There are several stages one has to go through before getting a seat in an IIT, and one of the most difficult stages is the entrance exam. Many students prepare for the IIT-JEE exam for years, but only a few manage to get into the college of their choice. One such young student managed to crack the IIT-JEE exam with AIR 1 and landed up at IIT Bombay, but he left after a year to follow his passion. Chitraang Murdia, who scored AIR-1 in JEE Advanced 2014, is the IIT-JEE topper we are talking about here. He then studied computer science at IIT Bombay but left to study physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The IIT-JEE topper’s decision to quit IIT Bombay has stunned many, but he explained the reason behind it in a Humans of Bombay post: “Everyone was shocked by this decision, even my friends. People always said that you are a kid and don’t know how to make important decisions in your life and you will make a fortune after completing your engineering degree from IIT,” he said.
Chitraang Murdia once said that his decision to quit IIT and follow his passion would inspire students. “I have seen that the students who are good in physics and mathematics follow the herd to get admission in courses like computer science and electrical engineering. This will boost the morale of the students who are interested in science but could not do so due to family pressure or money,” he said. Chitraang Murdia has revealed on his LinkedIn profile that he graduated in physics from MIT in 2018. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 2023.
