It was a tough loss for the RR skipper Sanju Samson at the hands of the Delhi Capitals as they suffered a defeat by 20 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.
The RR captain was in ridiculous touch with the bat and looked to almost single-handedly steer the chase of 222 in favour of the Royals. But the skipper’s innings was cut short of a century and the batting unit toppled thereafter.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Sanju gave his initial reaction to the loss where he thought the game was in their hands but not being able to go over the line is something that happens in the IPL.

“I think we had it in our hands, it was 11-12 runs per over, it was achievable, but these things happen in IPL,” said the RR skipper.
Interestingly, Samson had opted to bowl first against DC in a venue where the side batting first has won all the games this season. When asked about this decision, Sanju believed that the conditions demanded that they chase but conceded that they had given away a few runs extra.
The wicketkeeper-batter said, “Yes, we are doing both things fine, we would like to stick to what the conditions demand, 220 was 10 runs extra to chase, and if we had conceded a couple of fewer boundaries, we would have made it through”.

“The DC opener (Fraser McGurk) came out and did what he had done throughout the tournament, we still came back well,” added Samson.
This makes it the third loss for the Royals who have been fairly dominant throughout the season but Sanju reckons that his side have to work out the chinks in their armour and come back stronger.
He said, “We have lost three games but all those games have been tight, we have been playing remarkably well, we have to do some fine-tuning and make a comeback, we need to keep the momentum going”.
The late flurry of runs by the South African international, Tristan Stubbs proved to be the difference and Samson credited the middle-order batter from DC for his ability to take on some of his in-form bowlers Sandeep Sharma and Yuzi Chahal.

“You have to give credit to someone like Stubbs who batted well against Sandeep and has been bowling very well in the last 10-11 games, he scored 2-3 sixes extra against my best bowlers who are Yuzi Chahal and Sandeep Sharma,” Samson praised Stubbs.
“We have lost the game, we have to find out where we lost the game and we need to keep moving,” Sanju concluded.
