Bengal pacer Akash Deep, who was retained in India’s playing XI for the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, picked up two wickets for the Rohit Sharma-led side on Friday (September 27) in the first hour of opening day’s play to put the visitors on backfoot. He got rid of Zakir Hasan first and then removed his opening partner, Shadman Islam. While Zakir was caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal for a 24-ball duck, Akash breached Shadman’s defence to pick his second wicket of the match.
Shadman was given not out by the on-field umpire, but Akash convinced Indian captain Rohit to review the decision, and it turned out to be a masterstroke when the ball was seen hitting the stumps of the Bangladesh batter. After the giant screen on the field flashed the ball tracking replay, which confirmed Shadman’s wicket, Rohit gave a surprising reaction, which is now going viral on the internet.
Several videos of Indian players celebrating after Shadman’s wicket are now going viral on the internet.

Akash, who made his Test debut for India against England in February 2024, picked up two wickets in the first Test against Bangladesh, which was played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. There were high chances that he would make way for Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test, but despite that, Indian team management decided to continue with him, and the decision has proved right so far.
Rohit creates history
Indian skipper Rohit won the toss in Kanpur and opted to field first. Rohit’s decision to field at Green Park Stadium makes him only the second captain in history to field first after winning the toss in Test matches played at Green Park. MAK Pataudi was the first Indian captain to invite the opposition team to bat first in Kanpur after winning the toss. He achieved the feat during an India-England match played in 1964.
India’s decision to play with the same team is also the first instance in five years that India has not made any changes to the playing XI in matches played on Indian soil. The last series in which India played with the same team was against Bangladesh in November 2019. In that assignment, India managed to win both the matches under Virat Kohli’s leadership.
