Afghanistan have continued their fairytale run in the ongoing T20 World Cup having qualified for the last-four stage for the first time in their history. Afghanistan achieved the feat after a nerve-shredding win over fellow semi-finals hopefuls Bangladesh at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown on Monday night.

One of the greatest cricketers to have graced the game Sachin Tendulkar has reacted to Afghanistan’s progress pointing out their “hard work” and “determination” behind  the memorable performance.

“Afghanistan, your road to the semi-finals has been incredible, overcoming the likes of New Zealand and Australia. Today’s win is a testament to your hard work & determination. So proud of your progress. Keep it up!” Tendulkar posted on Tuesday.

Prior to the start of the final match of the Super 8 stage, as many as three teams including Afghanistan, Australia and Bangladesh were in contention for the fourth and final spot in the semi-finals.

For Afghanistan, the task was simple: beat Bangladesh and qualify. For Australia, they needed Bangladesh to win but not by a significant margin.

Bangladesh had to win big to pop both Afghanistan and Australia and they came close to doing that after limiting their opponent to 115/5 in 20 overs.

Bangladesh then had to chase down the target by 12.1 overs to surpass the net run-rate of Australia. However, it wasn’t meant to be as Afghanistan produced a gritty show with the ball and bowled out Bangladesh for 105 in 17.5 overs to win by eight runs.

“It’s a dream for us to be in the semifinals. The way we started the tournament, the belief came when we beat New Zealand. It’s unbelievable,” said Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan.

With this win, Afghanistan have made it to the semi-finals of a T20 world cup for the first time and will lock horns with South Africa next. The second semi-final will feature former champions India and England.
