India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is set to return to the ongoing Duleep trophy after missing out on the first two rounds due to injury. The Indian batter has been reportedly cleared by the National Cricket Academy to play in the final round of the red-ball tournament, beginning in Anantapur on Thursday.
According to ESPN Cricinfo, Suryakumar will replace Sarfaraz Khan in the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led India B in the game against Shreyas Iyer’s India D. Sarfaraz is currently a part of India’s Test squad which takes on Bangladesh in the first Test, starting Thursday in Chennai.
Suryakumar pulled himself out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy as a precautionary measure after complaining of discomfort in his right thumb. He sustained an injury while fielding at the pre-season Buchi Babu Invitational in Coimbatore.
The Indian T20I captain hasn’t featured in the longest format since last year’s Duleep Trophy. Before that, he was handed his Test debut in the first game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur.
Desire to Play Red-ball Cricket
Last month, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his desire to play in all three formats of the game for India as he looked to make a comeback in the Test team by doing well in domestic cricket.
“There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again. I made my debut for India in Tests. After that, I got injured as well. There were a lot of people who got an opportunity and have done well too. They deserve that opportunity right now,” Suryakumar was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
“Going forward, if I have to play, then I will automatically play. That’s not in my control. What’s in my power right now is to play [ongoing tournaments like Buchi Babu and Duleep] and then see what happens. But yes, I’m really looking forward to it. There are ten Test matches lined up [for India this season] and I’m obviously excited for some red-ball fun,” he added.
