Can't Judge People After Every Game': Gautam Gambhir Backs Virat Kohli's 'Hunger' for Runs Amidst Form Concerns
Gautam Gambhir sees Virat Kohli as hungry as ever amidst concerns regarding his batting form in the longest format.

Despite recent concerns over Virat Kohli’s form in Test cricket, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has thrown his weight behind the star batsman. Kohli’s last significant score in the format came against South Africa in December 2023, leading to speculation about his performance ahead of the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year.

However, Gambhir remains unfazed. “See, my thoughts about Virat have always been very clear – he is a world-class cricketer,” he told reporters on Monday. “He has performed consistently for such a long period. His hunger remains as strong as it was when he debuted.”

Gambhir emphasized the importance of this hunger, stating, “That hunger is what makes him a world-class cricketer. I am sure he will be eager to get runs in this series and moving forward to Australia as well.”

The former Indian opener cautioned against judging players based on isolated performances. “You don’t keep judging people after every game,” he argued. “It’s a sport, and failures are inevitable. What matters is focusing on the results and whether players are contributing to achieving those results.”

Gambhir emphasized his role in supporting the players and nurturing their desire for success, especially with a packed schedule of eight Test matches ahead. “Everyone doesn’t have their best day every day,” he acknowledged. “Our approach is to back our players. My job is to select the best playing eleven, not to drop anyone.”

He concluded on a note of optimism, saying, “I’m sure everyone is hungry and aware of the eight Test matches in a row. This is likely the start of their journey towards performing well in those matches.”

The first Test against New Zealand will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This would be followed by the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune playing host for the second game beginning on October 24 and finally the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai for the final match of the series.

The side will then look ahead for the headline Test event of the year, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where the Indian side will look to defend their crown against the mighty Aussies.
