Mkts rally in late trade, midcaps gain

Mumbai: After some weak sessions in the past few days the markets saw a strong closing with participation from frontline, midcap and smallcap stocks.

Select midcaps in particular saw strong moves.

The Sensex closed with gains of 124.53 points or 1.16 per cent at 10,876.19 knocking the doors at 10,900 and the Nifty gained 34 points at 3182 eyeing the 3200 mark.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,177.91 up 64.82 points or 1.27 per cent.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,338.12, up 54.95 points 1.28 per cent.

About 1613 shares have advanced, 734 shares declined, and 76 shares are unchanged.

The rally was seen in indices across sectors. All the BSE sectoral indices closed in the green.

Metal stocks led the rally followed by capital goods and auto stocks.

The BSE Metal Index advanced by 2.53 per cent at 7,887.71. JSW Steel, Jindal Saw, Tata Steel, Hind Zinc and Jindal Steel witnessed buying interest.

The BSE Auto Index added 2 per cent at 4,541.20. Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Bajaj Auto, Exide Industrie and Cummins closed in positive terrain.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.5 per cent at 7,176.43. Praj Industries, ABB, Gammon India and Siemen closed higher.

The BSE FMCG Index was up 1.08 per cent at 1,901.81. P&G, Shaw Wallace, Tata Tea and ITC closed in green.

The BSE Health Care Index was up by 0.9 per cent at 3,233.56. Orchid Chemical, FDC, Ipca Labs, Dr Reddys Labs and Novartis India were among the major gainers.

The BSE Bankex was up 0.8 per cent at 4,780.23. UTI Bank, Bank of India, PNB, Centurion BoP, Karnataka Bank were among the gainers.

The BSE IT Index was up by 0.6 per cent at 3,984.90 moved up. Mphasis BFL, HCL Tech, Patni Computer, HCL Info and I-Flex Solution jumped.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index rose 0.79 per cent at 5,100.83. MRPL, Petronet LNG, Chennai Petro and ONGC advanced higher.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 0.17 per cent at 2,730.56. BPL, Su-Raj Diamonds, Titan Industries and Blue Star were up.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 5,091.39 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 16,340.39 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2657.57 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 24,089.35 crore.

BSE Midcap gainers:

• Micro Inks was quoting at Rs 283.20, up Rs 26.55, or 10.34 per cent.
• Guj Alkali was quoting at Rs 185.40, up Rs 11.90, or 6.86 per cent.
• Essar Oil was quoting at Rs 42.80, up Rs 2.60, or 6.47 per cent.
• Jain Irrigation was quoting at Rs 228.00, up Rs 12.80, or 5.95 per cent.
• SRF was quoting at Rs 197.75, up Rs 11.10, or 5.95 per cent.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 227.00 down 0.77 per cent from its previous close of Rs 228.75.

Reliance was trading at Rs 985.10 up 0.32 per cent from its previous close of Rs 981.95. Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,665.35 up 0.4 per cent from its previous close of Rs 1,658.70.

Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 171.25 up 1.12 per cent from its previous close of Rs 169.35.
