Mumbai: The markets after breaching some important levels retraced back giving up some of the gains that it made during the day.
The bulls were holding strong for major part of the day but the bears attacked during the lat half an hour snatching away the gains.
The Sensex after trading above the 11,000 level for major part of the day closed at 10,923.16 up 47 points.
The Nifty was ruling above 3200 mark during the day but closed with marginal gains of 8 points to close at 3190.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,238.55, up 60.64 points or 1.17 per cent.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,373.97, up 35.85 points or 0.83 per cent.
The BSE sectoral indices closed mixed. Select banking and auto stocks witnessed moderate buying.
The BSE Bankex gained 1.3 per cent at 4,845.51. Allahabad Bank, Bank of India, Vijaya Bank and HDFC Bank were among top losers.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 1.4 per cent at 2,771.74. Whirlpool, Su-Raj Diamonds, Titan Industries and BPL gained ground.
The BSE Health care index closed up 0.6 per cent at 3,256.26. Wyeth, Ranbaxy Labs, Pfizer and FDC closed in the positive terrain.
The Auto index closed at 4,573.03 up 0.8 per cent. MRF, Amtek Auto, Exide Industrie and Apollo Tyres closed higher.
The BSE IT Index was up 0.5 per cent at 4,010.83. Hexaware Tech, Patni Computer, HCL Tech and Satyam closed green.
The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.94 per cent at 1,886.93. HLL, Colgate, ITC, McDowell and Tata Tea closed in red.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed down 0.42 per cent at 5,082.03. GAIL, MRPL, ONGC and BPCL slipped.
The BSE Metal Index was down 0.3 per cent at 7,853.75. Jindal Steel, Sesa Goa, Nalco and JSW Steel closed lower.
The BSE Capital Goods Index closed flat at 7,184.16.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6358.28 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 20502.68 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2931.76 crore.
Total market wide turnover was at Rs 29792.72 crore.
