CPI-M opposes FDI in retail sector
The CPI-M has asked PM Manmohan Singh to take the party into confidence before issuing public statements on economic issues.

New Delhi: On the sidelines of the Central Committee meeting, a senior CPI-M leader on Thursday, strongly opposed FDI in the retail sector.

CPI-M Politburo member and General Secretary of its trade union arm, M K Pandhe asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take the party into confidence before issuing public statements on economic issues.

"The Prime Minister is making many statements with which we totally disagree. He must consult us before airing his views," said Pandhe.

Pandhe's statements are a reference to the PM?s speech in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, on a positive decision for opening up the retail sector to Malaysia in five or six months.

"If the government is going to continue such measures, we will have to review our suspension of staying away from the Coordination Committee meeting," Pandhe said.

He also added that the CPI-M was opposed to the privatisation of pension fund, investing it in the stock market or seeking contribution from employees.

"We will not compromise on these basic issues," Pandhe said.

The three-day Central Committee meeting, which began on Thursday, will review national and international developments and will chalk out the strategy on raising all contentious issues with the government.
