A heartwarming video capturing an elephant herd enjoying a bath in a lake in Karnataka has been circulating on social media. The footage from Kusabur village of Chikmagalur district reveals the gentle giants revelling in the middle of the lake.
While the video captures a rare and delightful sight of elephants engaging in a refreshing bath, it also raises concerns among villagers residing near the lake. The forest villages nestled within the Koppa forest zone, including Kusuburu, Muttinakoppa, Satkola, and Mundugodu, express worries about the elephants potentially entering their villages, posing a risk of destruction.
Instances of elephants venturing out of their habitats and entering villages in search of food are not uncommon. In a previous viral video, elephants were observed shaking a tree to retrieve a jackfruit in June at the Narengi Army Camp in Guwahati. The elephants displayed remarkable dexterity in shaking the tree before patiently awaiting the jackfruit’s descent to the ground. Once the fruit dropped, the elephants skillfully used their trunks to collect and savour their meal.
Another noteworthy video featured Girija, a 31-year-old elephant, also known as Mahalakshmi, playing football at the Katee Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple in Karnataka. Locals shared that the elephant, brought to the temple in 1994, has been trained by individuals named Fairoz and Atlaf. Temple officials revealed that Girija has been actively engaging in sports like cricket and football for the past eight months.
While these videos offer a glimpse into the playful and endearing nature of elephants, they underscore the challenges faced by both villagers and wildlife as human and animal habitats intersect. The need for harmonious coexistence and measures to mitigate potential conflicts remains a crucial aspect of wildlife conservation in such regions.
