Karnataka Congress Leader Hariprasad’s 'Bootlickers of British' Remark Sparks Row
Hitting out at Hariprasad over the 'bootlicker remark', Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said that the Congress leader has indirectly spoken about how his own party is treating him

A war of words erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress in Karnataka after the ruling party MLC BK Hariprasad slammed the saffron party saying that those who are labelling his party as “Tipu Sultan party” were “British bootlickers of the British”.

His remark drew a sharp reaction from the BJP, with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi claiming that Hariprasad has been treated “worse than a boot” within his own party.

‘British Bootlickers’

Addressing the media in Hubballi on Sunday, Hariprasad said that at the time when the Congress leaders were involved in the freedom movement, those in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had “accepted their rule and were subservient to the British.”

“Nearly seven lakh people associated with Congress sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle. Ask them (the BJP) to name one person from the Hindutva party who died for the country. They were all bootlickers of the British. Let them not teach us that we should follow Tipu Sultan or someone else,” he said.

BJP Hits Back

Hitting out at Hariprasad over the ‘bootlicker remark’, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said that the Congress leader has indirectly spoken about how his own party is treating him.

“The Congress party is treating BK Hariprasad worse than a boot. He has indirectly criticised the present local leadership of his own party (Congress) because of the way they have treated him,” Joshi said.

Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje also slammed Hariprasad and asked what he knew about the British Raj.

“We know who were the bootlickers. If you try to dig into history, your face will get blackened,” she said.

‘Second Version Of Tipu Sultan’

The controversy started after BJP leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, while criticising Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for mulling to revoke the hijab ban in government-run universities and schools, accused him of appeasing a certain community and called him the “second version of Tipu Sultan”.
