The Volkswagen Group, whose car companies include Audi, Bentley, Skoda and Bugatti as well as VW, is partnering with South Korean tech giant LG Electronics in order to create the foundations for the connected car of the future.
The announced joint research and development program aims to create a digital platform that will seamlessly link the disparate elements of consumers' digital lives – from smart home devices and digital entertainment content to real-time navigation, news and alerts to their cars.
"LG Electronics and Volkswagen are teaming up to develop the next generation of connected car platform that allows wide integration with smart home services and adoption of open IoT connectivity technologies," said Richard Choi. "We think LG's expertise in smart technology together with Volkswagen's leadership in the automotive sector will revolutionise the way drivers interact with their vehicles."
According to VW, one of the most critical elements of the new platform will be how information and notifications are displayed or delivered and how content is accessed.
Cars will be ‘connected' long before they are truly autonomous, meaning that bringing these features to drivers needs to be done in a way that's not only simple and intuitive but is also distraction free.
