The facility is set to create over 1,200 new jobs for skilled aviation engineers and will support more than 200 SMEs in Karnataka.

Air India Group has kicked off the construction of a massive Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Bangalore International Airport.

This move highlights the airline’s commitment to enhancing India’s self-reliant aviation sector as it expands globally.

Spread across 35 acres, the new MRO hub will play a crucial role in maintaining Air India’s growing fleet. The groundbreaking ceremony saw the attendance of key officials including Ms. Gunjan Krishna, Commissioner for Industrial Development, and Mr. Hari Marar, CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), among others.

This facility is set to become a major maintenance center for Air India as the airline modernizes its operations. Earlier this year, Air India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Karnataka government and an agreement with SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) as a strategic partner for this development.

Ms. Gunjan Krishna expressed her excitement, “This is not only a milestone for Indian aviation, which is growing at a rapid pace, but also for the state of Karnataka, which is taking a lead in the aviation sector with Bengaluru set to emerge as an important global aviation hub in the coming years.”

Mr. Campbell Wilson, CEO of Air India, “The Bengaluru MRO facility is coming up at an opportune time to help strengthen India’s aviation ecosystem, while enhancing our in-house capabilities to maintain our fleet. This is a step ahead in our mission to make Air India a world-class airline.”

The MRO hub, featuring state-of-the-art technology and expansive hangars, will create over 1,200 job opportunities for skilled aviation engineers and support more than 200 SMEs in Karnataka. This project will not only boost Air India’s operations but also establish Bengaluru as a key global aviation hub.

In addition to this, Air India plans to enhance its maintenance capabilities across major airports, including a new wide-body hangar in Delhi and the expansion of its Line Maintenance facilities. The airline also aims to open a Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO) in Bengaluru by 2025, providing training opportunities for aspiring engineers.

Air India’s recent strategic partnerships with SIAEC, Lufthansa Technik, and Honeywell will further improve its maintenance efficiency and ensure the high reliability of its fleet. This MRO facility in Bengaluru is a significant step towards Air India’s vision of becoming more self-reliant and globally competitive.
