The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro train is gearing up to start operations by the end of July, awaiting the final nod from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).
According to TOI, the metro officials announced that the CMRS began a three-day inspection of the Ahmedabad metro Phase II corridor on Wednesday. Usually, the inspection, feedback, compliance, and final approvals are completed within a month, setting the stage for operations to begin by late July.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) started trial runs for Phase II in February. Phase II will connect Motera to Gandhinagar Sector I (Indroda Circle) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). Officials expect the entire stretch up to Mahatma Mandir to be finished by year-end.
Officials confirmed that the metro rail bridges over the Narmada Canal and Sabarmati were tested before inspection. The 303m-long Narmada Canal extradosed bridge uses cable-stay technology, while the 960m-long bridge across the Sabarmati, built with box girders, links Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad to GIFT City.
The upcoming stretch from Sector I to Mahatma Mandir, expected to open by the end of the year, will have six stations: Sector 10-A, Sachivalaya, Akshardham, Old Sachivalaya, Sector 16, and Mahatma Mandir.
The operational stretch between Motera and Sector I will include 13 stations, such as Vishwakarma College, Koba Circle, Gujarat National Law University, Info City, and GIFT City.
