WWE’s popular Slammy Awards may be non-existent now but its spirit was on full display as the company handed out awards for their NXT brand. Tuesday’s episode of WWE NXT packed a ton of action as the WWE Universe bid adieu to 2023.
From Heritage Cup title defence to the semi-finals of the Men’s Breakout tournament, there was a lot in store for fans. Apart from the usual jam-packed action, the night also featured an award-giving ceremony.
This year’s edition of the NXT Awards featured five categories including – the Male Superstar of the Year, Female Superstar of the Year and the Moment of the Year awards. The winners were decided by fan polls conducted on WWE’s official website.
The nominations for WWE NXT’s Tag Team of 2023 listed The Family, Alba Fyre Isla Dawn, Gallus, and Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs. Later on the night, the winner in this category was revealed to be The Creed Brothers also got a call-up for WWE’s main roster recently.
In the NXT Female Superstar of the Year category, former champion Tiffany Stratton found victory. She won the award over nominees including Roxanne Perez, Kiana James, Jacy Jayne and Lyra Valkyria.
For the Men’s Superstar of the Year award, Ilja Dragunov won the award against Carmelo Hayes, Wes Lee, Bron Breakker and Trick Williams.
Dragunov won his second honour of the night after being the co-recipient of the Match of Year award alongside Carmelo Hayes. Other nominations for this award category included matches like Dragunov versus Dijak at NXT Battleground, the Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge and an epic clash between Becky Lynch and Tiffany Straton that was held at No Mercy.
For the final award of the night, the NXT Moment of Year was won by the Undertaker who appeared on the show on October 10 to confront Bron Breakker while also delivering a chokeslam on him.
Alongside the various awards, the last NXT episode of 2023 saw a ton of good matches. The show kicked off with an All or Nothing match between Chase U and Price.
In women’s action, the night saw Cora Jade face Karmen Petrovic. Bron Breakker was also on the match card and pulled off an impressive victory over Nathan Frazer. The main event of the night was scheduled between Eddy Thorpe Dijak. The duo competed in an NXT Underground match on the night that could only be won either via knockout or submission. After some back-and-forth action, Thorpe hit Dijak with the Manifest Destiny DDT through the announcer’s desk to seal a win.
