He also invited the leader to visit India, also congratulating him once again for the Labour Party’s landslide win in the UK general elections.
“Pleased to speak with @Keir_Starmer. Congratulated him on being elected as the Prime Minister of the UK. We remain committed to deepening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and robust IN-GB economic ties for the progress and prosperity of our peoples and global good,” Modi said in a post on X.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, both the leaders spoke about working towards the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-UK Free Trade Agreement. Recalling the historic relations between the two countries, they appreciated the positive contributions of the Indian community in the social, economic and political development of the UK and agreed to continue to promote close people-to-people ties.
A day before on Friday (July 5), about Starmer’s election as the PM, Modi said he looked forward to their positive and constructive collaboration to further strengthen the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership. He also praised outgoing PM and Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak for his admirable leadership and active contribution to deepen the ties between India and UK during his term in office.
Starmer became the new PM after his Labour Party hurled towards a landslide majority in the parliamentary elections and dealt a bruising defeat for incumbent Sunak’s Conservative Party. Congratulating the new leader of the UK, Modi said, “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Keir Starmer on the remarkable victory in the UK general elections. I look forward to our positive and constructive collaboration to further strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in all areas, fostering mutual growth and prosperity.”
