The running mate of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has defended his 2021 remarks about Kamala Harris after the “childless cat ladies” comment grabbed headlines in the US, with dozens of Democrats coming out against it.
JD Vance’s response came after an old interview of his resurfaced on social media, just days after President Joe Biden endorsed Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee. During an appearance on a popular US news show, Vance said that his remarks were intended as sarcasm and aimed at criticising the rival party’s stance on family issues, not individuals without kids.
.@JDVance: I know the media wants to attack me and wants me to back down on this, Megyn, but the simple point that I made is that having children, becoming a father, becoming a mother, I really do think it changes your perspective in a pretty profound way. It’s not a criticism… pic.twitter.com/x1ZaLvxiAp

On The Megyn Kelly Show, Vance on Friday argued that the Democratic Party has become increasingly “anti-family” and “anti-child.” He reiterated that his comments were not meant to disparage those who cannot have children for various reasons, but rather to highlight what he sees as a lack of commitment to family values among Democrats.
