The death toll in the attacks on the Belgian capital rose to at least 31 with more than 200 wounded, Health Minister Maggie De Block said.

Brussels: The suspect arrested in Brussels terror attack is not Najim Laachraoui, said Belgian media on Wednesday.

Earlier, media reported that Najim Laachraoui had been arrested in the city's Anderlecht district.

Police were hunting him as a man seen with suspected suicide bombers at Brussels airport.

Laachraoui, the third bombing suspect who fled the Brussels airport on Monday, was reportedly arrested by special forces operatives.

Laachraoui's DNA had been found in houses used by the Paris attackers in 2015, prosecutors said, adding that he had travelled to Hungary in September with Paris attacks prime suspect Salah Abdeslam.

The death toll in the attacks on the Belgian capital, home to the European Union institutions and NATO, rose to at least 31 with more than 200 wounded, Health Minister Maggie De Block said.

The terrorist group, Islamic State, claimed responsibility four days after the arrest in Brussels of a prime suspect in November's Paris attacks.

The attacks sent shockwaves across Europe and around the world, with authorities racing to review security at airports and on public transport, and rekindled debate about European security cooperation and police methods.

The Brussels blasts fueled political debate across the globe about how to combat terrorists.
